Congrats are in order for Minnesota CBIG member Alicia Schwab on the release of her new book project for St. Catherine University. Here is a little info from Alicia's blog:

"Guide to Reflective and International Giving" for St. Catherine University.

I painted in total seven landscape paintings of the St. Paul and Minneapolis campuses. The concept/texture of the art for the book was built around a famous quote:

"We ourselves feel that what we are doing is a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop." -- Mother Theresa."

As costume designer on the film, Tessie describes it as "set in 1968 and dealing with the war protest movement, social unrest and so on". It is presented at that time as part of the Minnesota Film Festival and will be apart of many other movies that day!

The Institute on Community Integration is pleased to announce a new and exhilarating art exhibit to raise awareness about epilepsy, on display on all three floors of Pattee Hall. All are welcome to peruse the art during normal business hours.

The Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota (EFM) launched its Creative Arts Program in 2004, the only program of its kind in Minnesota and eastern North Dakota. The Brainstorms visual arts program is one of EFM’s three creative arts programs and features over 120 pieces from artists living with seizures. The collection travels throughout communities in Minnesota and eastern North Dakota to raise epilepsy awareness.

UMN Kerlan Collection celebrating 60 years!

One of the treasures that the University of Minnesota houses and we are fortunate to have in our backyard is the Kerlan Collection. Regarded as one of the worlds best children's literature research collections, the Kerlan offers a rare glimpse into the world of children's literature like none other. Whether it is a manuscript, drawings, original illustrations, or correspondencebetween editor and author, the Kerlan is a treasure trove of magic waiting to be discovered. Having visited the Kerlan a number of times, I would highly recommend it for anyone who loves children's literature or who wishes to learn more about it.

Roberto's dad speaks in Spanish when he gets upset, and boy, is he unhappy today! His lucky chair, the one he sits in to watch his beloved New York Yankees play, is missing. And he needs it for the afternoon game against the Red Sox!
Roberto is excited, too. He's about to take off to Mars on his home-made rocket ship, and his dad's lucky chair makes a perfect pilot's seat. When his father finds that the missing chair has become part of the rocket ship in the backyard, he grudgingly tells Roberto he can use it, for now. But it needs to be returned before game time.
Roberto's dad is skeptical about the rocket ship. ''You might have a problem getting off the ground'' he says. ''You're forgetting one little thing; you don't have an engine!'' Soon, he finds himself invited along as co-pilot. And during the exciting flight to Mars, Roberto helps his father rediscover his imagination as they experience an amazing blastoff, wayward asteroids, and even weightlessness.

Member Spotlight: Sara Weingartner

CBIG member and illustrator, Sara Weingartner, is excited to announce the NEW release of the book Sam Picks Football, by MN author Kimberly Bettcher. This 32-page book is an enjoyable read for any age who likes football, or just playing sports with other kids. It is an action-filled game with kicking, passing, catching, scoring, learning about teamwork, and building friendships. The back of the book contains a step-by-step guide to setting up your own game of football.

The book sells for $7.95 ($8.50 incl. tax) and can be ordered on the website: www.AWayToPlayBooks.com or by contacting Sara at sara@creativesouldesign.com. The book is set to be in are bookstores as well.

Sara has been illustrating and doing graphic design for almost 15 years. She loves to draw and paint. This book was created in acrylic. Sara resides in Minneapolis with her husband and daughter. More of Sara's work can be seen at www.CreativeSoulDesign.com.

Kimberly has been writing stories and poems for her own children for many years and was inspired to write this book when her son asked for a book about football at his reading level. Kim has also dedicated her life to promoting health and activity for all ages and frequently creates programs where kids can find joy in participating in physical activities. Kim has over 10 years experience as a program director at a fitness and aquatic center. This project afforded her an opportunity to combine her lifelong love of sports with her passion for writing books for children.

UPDATE: Tessie informed me that she was in a photo in the NY Times in an article titled "Jewish History, Popcorn included" Here is the photo (she is in the front row left side with the turquoise dress on!)

CBIG member Tessie Bundick announced in our meeting yesterday that she was in the movie "A Serious Man", directed by the Coen Brothers. It is to be released soon and was super excited about the reviews it was receiving. From all of us members, we would like to congratulate Tessie on this exciting news!
