CAPTURING CHARACTER by Artomel Black

Eyebrows rock! And dogs with eyebrows always make me smile. There is just something so wonderful about a dog that looks at you and raises her eyebrows, as if to say, Do you want to play fetch?

As visual artists, we learn to pay extra attention to little things like eyebrows. A great pair of eyebrows can express rage, empathy, sorrow, amusement, curiosity and so much more.

In fact, studies show that up to 93% of human communication comes from non-verbal interaction. For animals that number would be even higher.

Thats great news for artists. Our illustrations dont just add a little color to the story. Through expressive characters, our artwork can develop deeper levels to the story in a single image quicker than words could convey in several pages.

Lately, I've been on a mission to capture character, and I find tons of astonishing personalities with each new animal I meet. So I gave myself a challenge for 2014 to paint a different animal personality every week.

Thus the Petburbia Project was born - 1 year, 52 pets, endless pet hair.

I limited myself to just pets with a distinctive personality, just ones living in the Twin Cities suburbs, and only a single pet per portrait with only one animal from any household. This meant I had to get the word out, and had to meet new people and new pets.

So far I've met a precocious puppy whose aim in life appears to be food and destruction, a guinea pig that believes in feng shui, and a keeshond Australian shepherd mix that survived for almost a year with a wild dog pack after being abandoned.

I also spent a delightful hour with therapy dogs at the library. Every month these volunteer owners and well mannered dogs descend on the children's section of the library and patiently sit as eager kids practice reading to them.  What an amazing program! I can't wait until its my book theyre pulling off the shelves and showing to the dogs.

Although the Petburbia Project didnt begin as a concept for a childrens book, I can see it becoming one or at the very least inspiring one.

After all, the reason anyone wants to get to the end of a book is to find out what happened to the character who captured our attention on the very first page.

Free smiles, fun newsletter, and the chance to have your own pet painted in watercolor at the Petburbia Project.

New book by CBIG member Marilyn Brown

Congrats go out to fellow CBIG member Marilyn Brown on the release of her newly illustrated children's book titled "Gifts of the Heart", written by Karen Oman. If you are looking for a great book for this Christmas season, I suggest you check it out!

Here's a little blurb about the book

"When a terrible storm whisks Grandpa and Grandma off the road on Christmas Eve, it scatters their grandchildren’s presents all across Mother Goose Land. Their search for the lost gifts leaves them empty-handed but with hearts overflowing with love. But what will Grandpa and Grandma tell their grandkids when they arrive without presents?

A knock on the door leads grandparents and grandchildren on an exciting Christmas adventure, a night filled with music, magic, and the best gifts of all—gifts of the heart.

Featuring lush illustrations by painter Marilyn Brown, Gifts of the Heart brings generations together around a timeless message of love and generosity."

New Book out by Christina Rodriguez

Congrats to CBIG member Christina Rodriguez. Her new book titled "Baseball on Mars/Beisbol En Marte" from Arte Publico Press just released and is available for purchase. To get your very own copy of the book, you can buy them here or contact Christina thru her blog. Here is a little description of the book and way to go Christina!!!!!!

Roberto's dad speaks in Spanish when he gets upset, and boy, is he unhappy today! His lucky chair, the one he sits in to watch his beloved New York Yankees play, is missing. And he needs it for the afternoon game against the Red Sox!
Roberto is excited, too. He's about to take off to Mars on his home-made rocket ship, and his dad's lucky chair makes a perfect pilot's seat. When his father finds that the missing chair has become part of the rocket ship in the backyard, he grudgingly tells Roberto he can use it, for now. But it needs to be returned before game time.
Roberto's dad is skeptical about the rocket ship. ''You might have a problem getting off the ground'' he says. ''You're forgetting one little thing; you don't have an engine!'' Soon, he finds himself invited along as co-pilot. And during the exciting flight to Mars, Roberto helps his father rediscover his imagination as they experience an amazing blastoff, wayward asteroids, and even weightlessness.
When they finally land, Roberto surprises his father with two baseball gloves and a ball. ''Today s baseball game is on Mars,'' he tells his dad. After spending the day playing catch, father and son realize that they speak the same language on the Red Planet. And his dad doesn't even mind that he missed the Yankees' game!
Children ages 4-8 will want to embark on their own mission to Mars after reading this story that combines vibrant illustrations with a touching story about a father and son's afternoon adventure.
